Leeds Rhinos’ wobble leads to fresh Super League Grand Final verdict

Super League

Wigan Warriors have moved to heavy odd-on favourites to lift the Super League Grand Final trophy, with Matt Peet’s side backed to win a second treble in just three years.

For long periods of the season, it has been Leeds Rhinos that have been the betting favourites to lift silverware at Old Trafford but an end-of-season wobble from Brad Arthur’s side combined with Wigan continuing their winning run has flipped the odds, with Matt Peet’s side now 4/9 to win the Grand Final.

Leeds still remain second favourites but they’re a distant 5/2 shot when only six weeks ago they were joint-favourites with the Warriors, at least with Super League title sponsor Betfred.

The Rhinos have lost three of their last five games, all of which have come at home, with Headingley losing its fortress-like status. The round 26 defeat to Wigan was the most devastating, both in terms of the scoreline and the consequences.

In terms of immediate consequences, Leeds lost first place and therefore their grip on the League Leaders Shield, but the psychological effect of that 40-8 defeat will also be significant, particularly if Leeds are to meet Wigan again in the Grand Final.

Leeds do still have a bye, which is a significant advantage, and that makes them the clear second favourites ahead of those who still have play-off eliminators to get through.

It’s Warrington Wolves who lead the betting in that respect but they’re still a long shot at 16/1, whilst their play-off opponents and last year’s treble winners Hull KR are the rank outsiders at 40/1 to repeat their Old Trafford success.

Wakefield Trinity host Leigh Leopards in the other play-off eliminator and it’s Daryl Powell’s side, who have home advantage, that are fancied more but they’re still a 25/1 chance with Leigh rated at 33/1.

With the bookmakers rarely getting it wrong, all signs point to another Wigan Warriors treble, something that would represent a tenth trophy for Matt Peet in just five years of coaching – something that would make him arguably the greatest-ever Super League coach.
