Leeds Rhinos to make overseas signing as Rohan Smith confirms departure

Leeds Rhinos are set to make an overseas signing for the 2023 Super League season.

That’s because head coach Rohan Smith has confirmed the departure of one of those on the overseas quota – Bodene Thompson.

The 34-year-old has been a key part of the Rhinos’ set-up since making the move from the Toronto Wolfpack midway through the Covid-19-hit 2020 season.

A permanent deal was signed following the end of that season, with Thompson staying at Headingley ever since.

However, the former Leigh Centurions and Warrington Wolves forward will not be at the West Yorkshire club in 2023.

“Bodene and I have had several conversations about the future and we haven’t been in the position where we can offer something,” Smith said.

“We get on well as a player and coach and he’s one of the most respected teammates but at the minute we aren’t in a position to do anything there.”

That paves the way for Leeds and Smith to make another overseas signing in a bid to get their quota up to the maximum of seven.

Leigh Centurions’ Nene MacDonald has been linked with a move, though he only recently signed a new deal at the Leigh Sports Village, whilst Ricky Leutele has also been linked.

Justin Sangare will also be making the move from Toulouse Olympique for 2023 as will Wigan Warriors starlet James McDonnell.
