Leeds Rhinos to face off against Super League side in opposed session

Leeds Rhinos

Huddersfield Giants will take on Leeds Rhinos in an opposed training session while out in Tenerife, head coach Luke Robinson has confirmed.

Both Leeds and Huddersfield are currently on warm weather training camps in the Canaries as they bid to prepare themselves for the start of the Super League season, which gets underway in just under two months’ time.

Of course, fitness is one element of pre-season, but the head coaches have been working on different things over the winter and they’ll both be looking to make the most of their time in Tenerife before heading back to the UK for pre-season friendlies.

It makes sense to hold an opposed training session against each other then, with Robinson, confirming that the scrimmage will take place this week.

“There’s some creaking boys at the moment, there’s a few of them that have taken part in pretty much every minute of every session, so we lightened the day yesterday and gave them a day off today (Wednesday),” Robinson said in an interview posted on Huddersfield Giants’ official channels.

“We’ve got an opposed session with Leeds tomorrow, Leeds are over at the same time so we’ll have an opposed session with them tomorrow, so we’ve given them some down time because they’ve been working extremely hard.

“It’s just an opportunity to go against someone that doesn’t know how you’re going to attack. When you’re in training and it’s 13 on 13 or left v right, it’s you v you and the same systems are in place.

“Defensively the same systems are in place with the ball so it’s nice for our defence to be faced with an attack where we don’t know what’s going to come at us and conversely, we’re going to be attacking them and going against a new defensive system. Both sides will definitely get something out of it.”

Huddersfield have taken a number of youngsters with them to the Spanish island, with a promising crop of youngsters emerging from the academy ranks at the Accu Stadium. And, the head coach has singled out a couple of players out who have caught his eye over the last week.

“They’ve all been very good,” Robinson added. “Needing a half on that side, Marshall Land has been getting a lot of reps and he seems to be improving massively.

“Probably one of the stand outs is Jacob Algar, his leg speed, getting off leads, his ability to get around the field and his tenacity in defence has really shown up. He’s not scared to go toe to toe with the older lads which I love.”
