Leeds Rhinos starlet commits future to the club

Leeds Rhinos have a lot of exciting youngsters currently at the club, with many tipping them for a new golden generation.

Harry Newman picked up the Young Player of the Year in 2020 and looks set to be one of the league’s best centres over the next decade, whilst Mikolaj Oledzki has established himself as an England international. Meanwhile the likes of Liam Tindall and Jack Broadbent have shown real promise with younger players like Levi Edwards, Oli Field and Jack Sinfield being tipped for bright futures.

But one player who – despite being just 18 – is already an established regular in the first team in Morgan Gannan who has committed to the club until the end of 2025.

The second-row and son of former Halifax man Jim Gannon and brother to Warrington youngster Jacob made his debut off the bench against St Helens last season in the Challenge Cup and immediately did not look out of place. His Super League debut followed a week later against Wigan meaning he’d already stood up to the challenge of facing two of Super League’s biggest sides.

His first try followed shortly after against Castleford at the Jungle and he grew from strength to strength helping Leeds secure play-off rugby last season.

He’s started this season strongly featuring in all four of Leeds’ games so far and is expected to play again tonight as Leeds take on Hull FC.

He’ll certainly be full of confidence having scored last week against Wakefield and having signed a new deal keeping him at Leeds at least until the end of 2025 no doubt putting some Leeds fans at ease with some claiming it won’t be long till the NRL takes interest.

On the new deal the England Knights international said: “I am really pleased to have got my contract sorted and have that locked in so I can focus on my rugby. I am happy to be getting game time, getting plenty of minutes under my belt and learning every week. That’s all I can really ask for so I’m really happy.

“The last eighteen months have been big for me, Leeds have given me that opportunity to play first team rugby and be able to show what I can do. I am really grateful for that.

“The decision to sign a long term contract with Leeds wasn’t too difficult. The Rhinos have been everything that I have always wanted in a club. They have given me the chance to play first team and I can’t thank them enough.

“The direction the club is going in is really positive and there is a lot of good youth coming through all at the same time and hopefully we can enjoy success together.”

Meanwhile Head Coach Richard Agar had this to say: “It is great news that Morgan Gannon as agreed a new long term contract with the club. First and foremost, Morgan is an outstanding young man and a real credit to his family. On top of that he has a tremendous talent, which he has shown over the last eighteen months in Super League with the Rhinos. I am sure he will continue to progress over the coming years.”
