Leeds Rhinos star proud of squad number change but concedes “it doesn’t mean anything”

2020 Lance Todd Trophy winner Richie Myler is hoping for a big season in 2023 as he returns to pre-season training with Leeds Rhinos having represented Ireland in the Rugby League World Cup.
Myler spoke about this on the Rhinos’ YouTube channel:
“It’s been good I was in a couple of weeks ago to keep sticking over and I need to get back to it
now.”
He also opened up on his move to the number one shirt having worn 16 in 2020, 2021 and 2022 taking the one shirt from Jack Walker as he joins Bradford Bulls in 2023.
Myler has said it means a lot to take on a famous shirt number, previously worn by the likes of Iestyn Harris, Brent Webb, Andrew Ettinghausen and Bev Risman:
“It was a bit of a bonus, yes. It’s more of a reflection of the year before I suppose. It’s one of those
that’s a nice accolade to get, I’m very honoured to wear it, some great players have worn the
number one before but at the end of the day whether I play and where I play will be about my
performance and what the team needs.”
That said, he conceded it didn’t mean anything in securing his place in the team:
“It’s nice, it’s a nice accolade to have, it doesn’t really mean anything when it comes to picking a
team.”
That said, with Luke Hooley injured for the start of the season, it seems unlikely anyone else will move him out of the fullback spot.
