Leeds Rhinos star opens up on surprise positional switch

Morgan Gannon has enjoyed a meteoric rise at Leeds Rhinos, he is a regular first team player and has been for two season but has only turned 19 this month.

Reflecting on last season, Gannon revealed that he was pleased with what he accomplished:

“I was pleased with last season, after 2021 I wanted to push on and get more games and stay on that trajectory. I played more games and had a bigger role than I did in the previous year. So I’m happy with that,” Gannon said on the club’s YouTube channel.

It’s a new experience for Gannon pre-season as it is the first full pre-season for the young man now he has finished his A-Levels:

“It feels weird that it’s the first one that I’m doing it every day and not missing any games with college.

That isn’t the only new experience for Gannon.

Over the weekend, coach Rohan Smith explained he has been training at stand-off and Gannon opened up on this:

“I’ve had a run at stand-off which has been good, it’s been new and enjoyable. It’s been developing my understanding of the game and the positions I need to be even if I move back to the edge because I know what my halfback wants from me there.”

He also spoke about the new signings at the club:

“There are, they’re settling in really well. Derrell Olpherts was in the first week and Justin Sangare has just come in. They’ve settled in well and bringing lots of energy.”

Now back in pre-season, he’s enjoying getting back into the thick of things:

“It’s been good, getting back into the routine of it. There have been some long days which have been tough.W

Meanwhile, he is keen to play in the Boxing Day friendly against Wakefield Trinity:

“I want a run out and hopefully I’ll be in that team.”
