As seen by the success at Leeds Rhinos, Wigan Warriors, St Helens in the past and showcased by George Williams at Warrington Wolves and Jake Clifford at Hull FC in 2023, halfbacks are the bedrock of any side’s success.
But there are many clubs who will be in the market for a new halfback in 2024. Leigh Leopards will be hoping that they won’t have to join the merry go round as Canberra Raiders and others target Lachlan Lam.
The same could be said of Salford Red Devils as Wests Tigers consider a move for him. Hull FC are resigned to losing Clifford to North Queensland Cowboys so they will join the clubs we have known for a long time are in the market for halfbacks.
These Leeds, Catalans and Wigan too. Wigan’s number six Cade Cust is out of contract and now playing as a number nine with Bevan French having to feature as a stand-off.
Meanwhile both Blake Austin and Aidan Sezer are out of contract at the end of the year.
There have been reports saying Austin is considering options outside of Leeds but the club appear determined to keep the former Warrington Wolves star.
As for his former Canberra Raiders teammate Aidan Sezer, he is set to leave Leeds according to reports.
He joined Leeds on a two year deal after an impressive stint at Huddersfield Giants being nominated for the Man of Steel in 2020.
His time at Headingley has highlights such as scoring winning tries against Castleford Tigers and Catalans Dragons last year but he has dealt with injuries too.
He did help Leeds reach the Grand Final but had to sit out the final at Old Trafford when a late hit from former Canberra Raiders teammate John Bateman knocked him out ruling him out of the decider with St Helens.
Leeds went on to lose in his absence with Phil Clarke recently suggesting that this was because he couldn’t feature.
Though he has been superb in recent weeks, especially stepping up against Salford Red Devils last week in the absence of Blake Austin, he is headed home.
Now there is reports coming from the Daily Telegraph down under that Sezer is a target for the Wests Tigers alongside Salford’s Croft.
