Leeds Rhinos star absent after matters were “complicated” in surprising way

There was a surprise omission in the Leeds Rhinos squad Rohan Smith named today.

Everyone expected James Bentley to be back after his head knock ruled him out of the Challenge Cup clash against Wigan Warriors.

However, the backrower is still getting through the return to play protocols and matters have been complicated by the removal of his wisdom teeth.

“He’s still working through the return to play from the concussion that he had,” Smith said.

“Sort of complicating matters there as well he’s had his wisdom teeth removed and that’s been a bit of a Slower than expected recovery.

“So the two of those things together, but he’s still working through the the protocol to return to availability.”

It will be interesting to see if Bentley’s prolonged absence sees Morgan Gannon return to the backrow after playing in the halves last week.

On Gannon’s ability to play in the halves, Smith said:

“I think the game itself has maybe gone through a period in the last 10 or 20 years where all seven and six have had a very similar role, played left and right only, similar responsibilities, similar skill sets, similar stature.

“So I see Gano having a little bit of point of difference there. With Cameron Smith as a skilled ball-playing 13 as well that while Blake’s out injured perhaps the dependency on traditional half-back is not as important for us.”
