Leeds Rhinos performance against Hull FC an “embarassment” according to Jon Wilkin

Leeds Rhinos

Leeds Rhinos season has stuttered so far this season in the Super League, however, today the wheels appear to have come off completely. Whilst the Rhinos have remained in touch with the top six so far, their performances have never been convincing. Today’s 18-10 defeat against Hull FC is a new low for Rohan Smith’s side.

Three tries in ten minutes on either side of halftime gave Hull momentum, and they went on to complete a comfortable victory against the lacklustre Rhinos side. Leeds looked passive in defence and unstructured in attack as they never got into the game.

With speculation around Smith’s future, following the appointment of Ian Blease as Sporting Director from the Salford Red Devils, this result will do nothing to ease the pressure on the Rhinos’ Head Coach.

Now, speaking on the Sky coverage of the game, pundit Jon Wilkin has offered a withering assessment of the Rhinos’ performance.

The discontent amongst Leeds’ fan base first began to surface publicly during Leeds’ lacklustre victory against Hull FC in Round 9 of the Super league. Leeds won that game 18-12, however, they were far from convincing that day. The performance prompted a section of the Rhinos’ support to openly chant for Smith’s departure.

Hull FC game into the game on the back of 11 consecutive defeats in all competitions, but managed to break their losing streak to hold off the Rhinos and move to four points for the season.

Speaking at half-time, Wilkin did not hold back on the Leeds performance, suggesting they should be embarrassed, given the talent they have in their squad. Wilkin said:

“Without doubt. Hull’s defence has been great. There’s two sides to it. Leeds, come on. The attack you’re talking about. I’m just saying, they want to be in the playoffs come on it’s just not they’re not there with the ball in wet conditions.

“Don’t get me wrong Hull FC have been the better team here and I think that should be an embarrassment really for Leeds and the names they’ve got on that team sheet”

Wilkin believes that the Rhinos have structural problems which are limiting their ability to compete in games. According to Wilkin, the Rhinos’ defence is too passive, which is allowing sides to get on top of them.

“I think I’ve said it numerous times they’re way to passive defensively. Now that might be strategy, that might be Rowan’s strategy.

“For me, it’s a flawed strategy. That’s just my opinion. I think one thing I see with this Leeds as a team that haven’t for me got an identity or trying to find an identity and it’s not strong enough for me to be able to see it”

The result poses a big question for new Sporting Director, Ian Blease, who now has a decision to make on Smith’s future. Salford coach, Paul Rowley, distanced himself from a move to the Rhinos in his post-match press conference after Salford’s game against Warrington. This result will nothing to dampen speculation linking him with Leeds.
