Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow’s father, Geoff, provides harrowing government latest

At the weekend, a football charity match was held at Crofton to raise money for Motor Neurone Disease Research.

Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow and his father, Geoff, attended the game between Kews Charity FC vs Once Upon a Smile celebrity side with the likes of Emmerdale’s Danny Miller turning out hoping to raise as much money as possible for the Motor Neurone Disease Research Centre in Leeds.

However, the fundraising issue has been the lack of government help and their refusal to release the £50 million that they promised for the cause.

As such, Geoff Burrow has taken to social media to once more bring attention to that fact after such a good day at the weekend.

Geoff Burrow tweeted: “Thank you Darren and everyone who attended the charity football match at Crofton today. So many kind people supporting charities. We just need the Government to be kind and fulfil their MND funding promises.”

It’s a harrowing update that Geoff Burrow has had to do this in order for the government to maintain their pledge for an incredible cause.

The decision to withhold funds has been a major kick in the teeth for Burrow and his supporters, which includes former Leeds Rhinos teammate Kevin Sinfield.

Sinfield ran seven marathons in seven days raising £3 million for MND charities, going the extra mile for his former teammate ever since his diagnosis back in late 2019 and the two have provided hope to so many people with the platform the two have created.

The ex-Rhinos captain went on to run 100 miles in 24 hours which is the equivalent of four marathons back-to-back with no sleep. He ran from his new club Leicester Tigers’ Welford Road Stadium all the way to Leeds’ Emerald Headingley Stadium.

But, all of those efforts have fallen on deaf ears in Downing Street, much to the chagrin of Rob and his family, as well as his mighty support.

Geoff previously tweeted: “I am absolutely disgusted that NO MONEY has been received of the £50 million over 5 years for MND !!! Government and Health Minister should hang their heads in shame. Was the “promise” just a cruel sick lie ? Give us the money PLEASE.”

Despite Geoff’s plea, nothing has yet been done and the Burrow family and the MND community are STILL waiting months later. Let’s hope they finally get what they deserve.
