There’s a lot of discussion about Shaun Wane’s selection going into the knockout stages.
His England side are set to face Papua New Guinea in the quarter-finals next week at Wigan Warriors’ DW Stadium.
There are a number of question marks over his 17 at present and one is on the wing where Wane has to pick two of Tommy Makinson, Ryan Hall and the tournament’s leading try scorer Dom Young.
Though Leeds Rhinos legend Jamie Jones-Buchanan didn’t weigh in on who should play, he did describe the former Huddersfield Giants youngster as inspiring to watch on BBC: “Dom Young, the rise of him as an athlete. It’s inspiring watching him run with the ball.”
He also identified the three players he thinks England look better with: “I think when Tom Burgess and Chris Hill are on the team they’re a different team, I think there has been enough evidence to suggest that, I’d throw Morgan Knowles in there as well.”
Lastly, he also thinks Shaun Wane should be commended for picking George Williams despite his struggles with the Warrington Wolves this year: “George Williams of the context of the year he’s had, the confidence Shaun Wane has had to play him outside of his domestic form was a stroke of genius.”
Williams has been in outstanding form for England during the tournament with two tries in three games and picking up the Man of the Match award against France.
It remains to be seen if these big selection calls will see England win the World Cup.
