Leeds Rhinos legend Kevin Sinfield explains how rugby league career prepared him for huge role

Leeds Rhinos legend Kevin Sinfield has properly started his new role as Defence Coach for England Rugby Union.

Speaking after his first involvement, former Rhinos skipper emphasised how big of a moment it was to put on the badge.

He also explained how his rugby league career, where he captained England, prepared him for this moment.

He said on the RFU website:

”It was a really nice moment when I got to put the badge on for the first time. I was fortunate enough to play for my country and loved my time as an international, so to put on a different badge but understand exactly what it means is really special to me.

“To come and meet the players in Liverpool and Gloucester has been wonderful. In all my time in rugby, the connections and friendships are really special. It leaves me with an incredible excitement for what’s possible this year, because the talent available is wonderful.

“Over the last two days I’ve realised how hard everyone works from a management view behind the scenes, how well structured the camp is and how it’s been put together.”

He also explained how his career prepared him for the role and working in an international environment:

“The big thing for me was the excitement of the players to come into this type of camp. Having been an international player myself and knowing how tough it can be to go into camp, how tough it can be to mix with players who they’ve spent the last three months competing against, then suddenly they come and interact with them as teammates, I’ve been really impressed.”
