Leeds Rhinos legend Barrie McDermott gives honest verdict on Daryl Powell and Warrington Wolves in 2022

Sky Sports presenter Barrie Mcdermott

It’s been all for Daryl Powell as he finishes round five of Super League with his new side.

After eight-and-a-half years at Castleford Tigers, Powell left the Jungle at the end of the 2021 campaign after two poor showings in two seasons, with no play-off finish in either 2021 or 2020.

Warrington, meanwhile, parted ways with head coach Steve Price following four years at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, ushering in a brand-new era.

For one former Leeds Rhinos forward Barrie McDermott, however, Powell taking the Warrington job doesn’t mean that they will win silverware, especially now that the club has lost two games on the bounce.

“Powelly (Daryl Powell) is an exceptional coach and he’s going to try and change the way Warrington will play,” McDermott told the Rugby League Review podcast.

“He hasn’t promised silverware but he’s made it so fans will come and want to watch – they want to score tries and that’s the best pressure relief ever.

“He hasn’t promised anything except wanting them to play a new brand of rugby.

“Having said that, I’m not sure about Warrington, I might eat my words halfway through the season but we will have to see.”

There’s not only Powell who has being appointed to a new role going into the 2022 season, but so has Lee Radford, Paul Rowley and Willie Poching.
