Four coaches in the running for Leeds Rhinos job, according to Sky Sports

Leeds Rhinos Head Coach contenders

Sky Sports pundit Jon Wilkin has named four coaches that may be in the running for the vacant Leeds Rhinos head coach role.

The Rhinos have been without a head coach since Rohan Smith left the club last month, with Chev Walker taking interim charge of the team in the absence of a permanent person to take on the role.

According to Ian Blease, the Rhinos’ sporting director, in charge of the search for Smith’s successor, the club have spoken to some “high-calibre candidates” in both the UK and Australia, and they will enter the next stage of the search this week.

For a long time, it seemed that Paul Rowley was the main option, in no small part due to his past work with Ian Blease, as well as Brodie Croft and Andy Ackers.

However, this no longer seems to be the case.

On Sky Sports’ The Verdict, Jon Wilkin was asked who he tipped to take on the job, and he offered up four names.

He said: “A name from the NRL, Justin Holbrook – just announced that the Kangaroos assistant coach, coached me at St Helens.

“I’ll tell you this now, an exquisite coach, like one of the best and I actually think would be an amazing appointment for Leeds Rhinos if they got him in. He could do everything that they wanted him to do.”

Holbrook’s previous time in Super League was successful, winning the Challenge Cup, League Leaders’ Shield and the Super League Grand Final with St Helens, and would surely fit the bill of a “high-calibre candidate” for the Rhinos, who will certainly hope to achieve something similar to previous successes.

Wilkin continued: “Maybe Dean Young, I’m going to throw a few curveballs in, Chad Randall, maybe Danny McGuire, get Danny McGuire back. What about that, Jenna? What do you think?”

Danny McGuire, being a club legend, will always be linked with the job, but is currently assistant to Craig Lingard at Castleford Tigers, following his similar role with Hull KR.

Dean Young, also currently an NRL assistant coach, is at St. George Illawarra Dragons, and has been interim coach for both the Dragons and North Queensland Cowboys.

Finally, Chad Randall is assistant for Manly Sea Eagles but does have plenty of Super League experience, playing for London Broncos between 2006 and 2013, becoming one of the club’s all-time record appearance makers.
