At least six Super League players will be under the disciplinary microscope this week following their actions in round four.
Indeed, it seemed to be something of a busy weekend for match officials with five yellow cards being shown over the course of the Super League round. This season hasn’t been littered with player offences and as a rule it seems players have adapted to the competition’s stricter rules around head contact and high tackles.
Every so often players overstep the mark, though, and that’s what we saw this week with disciplinary points set to be handed to a host of individuals. Because of the new disciplinary system that has been introduced this season, bans haven’t been quite as frequent as in years gone by, with players needing to collect a minimum of six points before being eligible for a ban.
However, there will be some Super League clubs sweating on this afternoon’s disciplinary news on the back of the weekend’s action.
Hull FC saw two players sin-binned on Thursday night as Aidan Sezer and Jordan Rapana saw yellow for high tackles. Sezer’s punishment was universally regarded as harsh with the Black and Whites skipper catching Leigh Leopards’ David Armstrong marginally high but he could still be set to receive disciplinary points today.
Rapana’s challenge on Armstrong looked slightly worse and will be looked at, as will a Matt Davis’ crusher tackle which was placed on report.
Salford Red Devils’ Kallum Watkins was given 10 minutes after a high shot in Friday’s game against Castleford Tigers ensuring he could be in trouble, while the referee was kept busy in the south of France as Leeds Rhinos took on Catalans Dragons.
Jake Connor was sent for a spell in the sin-bin for a dangerous tackle and Catalans’ Romain Navarrete met the same fate in a separate incident.
Little disciplinary action was taken on Sunday but it’s fair to say Harry Smith could be one of those watching on nervously with his high shot on Adam Clune in the build-up to the Giants’ third try set to be looked at. It wasn’t one spotted by officials but it will almost certainly be examined.
