Leeds Rhinos’ Harry Newman explains how he specifically targeted Wigan Warriors star as he reveals unique approach to games and training

Harry Newman is a serious competitor and his recent appearance of Sky Sports’ brilliant new show Super League in the detail emphasised that as Jon Wells broke down what makes Newman a Super League star.

This included Newman explaining his aggressive approach to training causing some of his teammates to moan about the intensity he brought: “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve pulled off plays like that. I think if you can keep those things up the ranks and even in training. Coming through the academy at Leeds, there’s always been people moaning at me for training too hard but that’s just the way I am. I want to train as I play.

“We come in on a Monday morning and we’d have a contact session and I’d be running like I was playing a Super League Grand Final and players moaning at me.”

He also revealed a player he tried to mould himself on when he was developing through the club’s academy: “I think for every young kid having that level you want to get to and pushing yourself. Having players you want to emulate, for me I had Kallum Watkins at Leeds probably the best centre in the league and the world at the time. He was someone great I could learn off and I brought a lot of what he can do into my game.”

He also revealed that every game he identifies an opponent he wants to dominant taking on a huge challenge when the Rhinos played Wigan attempting to pocket the Warriors’ star man Jai Field.

Field has perhaps been Super League’s best player but when Newman came up against him earlier this year, Newman caused him endless problems as they beat the Warriors 42-12.

On this, he said: “In every game I pick a battle with someone who can make an influence and it’s been obvious all season that Jai Field has been incredible and in this game I put my hand up and I said I’d do a job on him and I thought I did that.

“We spoke before that if I could get into him and ruffle him then I might prevent him scoring the tries he does in attack.”
