Leeds Rhinos give injury update on Alex Mellor after hospital trip following Catalans Dragons fixture

Super League was rocked last night when Leeds Rhinos forward Alex Mellor was carried off inside the opening exchanges of the West Yorkshire club’s defeat to Catalans Dragons.

Mellor left the field on a stretcher, with the French side eventually running out 10-4 winners in what was a drab affair, live on Sky Sports.

The Leeds club has now made a statement following the trip to hospital in a bid to reassure supporters and onlookers on what looked a bad incident.

The statement reads: “We are pleased to confirm that Leeds Rhinos forward Alex Mellor has been cleared of serious injury after pre-cautionary treatment at hospital last night following an injury in Thursday night’s clash with Catalans Dragons.

“Mellor was injured inside the opening ten minutes of the game at Headingley with the game delayed for a prolonged period whilst the Rhinos medical team gave immediate treatment on the field. Mellor was stretchered from the field and taken to hospital as a pre-caution.

“However, he was allowed to return home after being assessed and has been cleared of serious injury. We would like to thank everyone who has been in touch with the club and on social media sending their well wishes to Alex.”

Last night’s defeat was three consecutive losses to begin the 2022 Super League competition for Leeds.
