Leeds Rhinos’ Gary Hetherington provides latest on potential loan deals after discussing Zak Hardaker

With Leeds Rhinos announcing their new head coach, Rohan Smith, yesterday on a three-and-a-half year deal, CEO Gary Hetherington also announced his intention to try and bring someone into the club ahead of the fixture with Toulouse Olympique.

One of those names linked was Zak Hardaker, who was dropped by Wigan Warriors boss Matty Peet last week for ‘dipping below standards’, with Hetherington remaining resolute in response.

“We are in a situation where we are looking for any player that can add value,” Hetherington said.

“You don’t need to talk to about the virtues of Zak Hardaker to me – he is an outstanding player.

“We have been scouring the market to se if anyone is available so there’s quite a bit going on behind the scenes.”

Hetherington bemoaned the injuries and suspensions to much of the first-team at Headingley, but also explained how the salary cap makes it difficult for mid-season moves.

“It’s always difficult in the season but we didn’t expect to have ten of our frontline players missing which is what we’ve got at the moment.”

However, since then, Hetherington has told the Yorkshire Evening Post that any deal for a player will now not be happening following an unsuccessful search.

He said: “Because we are so depleted, with 10 of our frontline players injured or suspended, we have been looking at what might be available in terms of players on loan.

We have made some enquiries, privately, to other clubs on that basis, but nothing has been forthcoming so we have abandoned that initiative and we will move on without it.”
