Leeds Rhinos forward hit with two match ban

Rugby league is back. This weekend three exciting friendlies have taken place as we look ahead to the new season.

Along with it, the fantastic tries and crunching tackles are back to entertain us all.

But along with all that comes the inevitability of foul play, penalties and suspensions and the first player to be hit with a ban in 2022 has been revealed.

In the last game of 2021, Leeds defeated Wakefield 34-6 thanks to a brace of tries from both Ash Handley and Harry Newman along with tries from Tom Briscoe and debutant Aidan Sezer.

The Rhinos dominated the game especially after halftime. Just after the interval Leeds lit up Headingley with a break from Richie Myler leading to the try of the game from Handley as he crowned the afternoon in which he captained the side once more with a second try.

What made this more impressive is the fact this try came whilst Leeds were down to 12 men. James Donaldson had been sin binned at the end of the first half for a late shot.

The yellow card wasn’t the only punishment handed to the former Bradford and Hull KR forward with the RFL today revealing that he’s been given a two match ban for dangerous contact meaning he’ll miss the friendlies against Featherstone and former club Bradford but should be available for Tom Briscoe’s testimonial against Hull FC on the 30th January.

The minutes from the disciplinary panel stated: “A defending player makes contact with an opponent after the ball has been released by an opponent in a vulnerable position which causes flexion to the head, neck or spinal column on an attacking player, which poses an unacceptable risk of injury to that player.”

Meanwhile Wakefield’s Yusuf Aydin was given a caution for dangerous contact whilst incidents featuring Lee Gaskell and Mikolaj Oledzki were also looked at for a high tackle and a dangerous throw respectively. Neither player was given any punishment.
