Leeds Rhinos could be without three key players in Round One

Leeds Rhinos head coach Rohan Smith

Leeds Rhinos are facing a mini-injury crisis at the start of 2024 with several forward facing time on the sidelines.

The Rhinos could be without three props at the start of the Super League season as well as a key backrower as their season starts against Salford Red Devils.

As revealed by the Yorkshire Evening Post the Rhinos will definitely be without the impressive Sam Lisone. But exacerbating matters is the doubts looming over fellow props Tom Holroyd and Kieran Hudson. Holroyd has a knee issue and Hudson is recovering from an achilles  injury.

Meanwhile, both James Bentley and Morgan Gannon are recovering from concussion but Bentley is near recovery but Gannon doesn’t have a return rate.

Leeds Rhinos Team News

With Round One a month away we thought we’d take a look at Leeds’ team news for the opening game and predict their line-up.

Fullback: Lachie Miller
Leeds’ exciting new number one certainly made an impression on debut on Boxing Day with two assists and making things happen but they didn’t always go according to plan. Either way, he should be an exciting watch in 2024.

Wingers: David Fusitu’a and Ash Handley
A pair of powerful wingers who can get sets started well and can finish chances, Leeds will be hoping they can keep both fit. Fusitu’a has had his fair share of injuries since arriving. Derrell Olpherts is also an option with the winger set to remain at the club.

Centres: Harry Newman and Paul Momirovski
Like Fusitu’a, Leeds will be hoping they can keep Newman fit otherwise we may see Rhyse Martin return to centre. Two excellent centres who have now got underway for pre-season after neither featured on Boxing Day.

Halfbacks: Brodie Croft and Matt Frawley
A new halfback pairing with plenty of balance. Croft has now gotten over a slight injury concern and is back after returning to Australia over the festive period.

Props: Mikolaj Oledzki and Tom Holroyd
This is where it gets tricky. There is a lot of pressure on Holroyd to be fit for round one. If not, Oledzki will be joined by the versatile Mickael Goudemand.

Hooker: Andy Ackers
Leeds’ exciting new number nine will definitely start against his former club after impressing on Boxing Day.

Back-rowers: James Bentley and Rhyse Martin
Despite suffering with a concussion, Bentley is set to return to action soon and this should see him ready to start alongside Martin.

Loose-Forward: Cameron Smith
Leeds’ new skipper, Cameron Smith has gotten over his injury problems and is ready to start Round One all being well.

Substitutes: Jarrod O’Connor, Justin Sangare, Mickael Goudemand, James McDonnell
Despite the absence of Lisone, the Rhinos will name a strong bench but Rohan Smith may wish he had another prop to call on. At this stage, Morgan Gannon looks unlikely to feature as he recovers from concussion.

Who do Leeds Rhinos play?

The Rhinos will take on Salford Red Devils in the opening game of the season but between then and now the Rhinos have three friendlies.

A mixed team will head to Odsal to take on former rivals Bradford Bulls which could see James Bentley return from injury.

The following week on February 4th, the Rhinos take on Hull KR in James Donaldson’s testimonial which is set to see Smith name a strong team where Tom Holroyd is a 50/50 chance of featuring.

Then they take on Hunslet which will be the academy lads getting a run out before their season starts.

After Salford, Leeds take on Hull KR and then Catalans Dragons.
