Leeds Rhinos are said to be confident that the events currently taking place at Yorkshire County Cricket will not affect their club.

It follows the news that stadium sponsor, the Emerald Group, has withdrawn their support for all clubs associated with the Headingley cricket, rugby union and rugby league teams after the investigation by the Yorkshire County Cricket Club to not take disciplinary action against those accused of racism by ex-player Azeem Rafiq.

“We have today taken the decision to remove our brand association with Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Headingley Stadium,” the Emerald Group said.

“We do not tolerate any form of racism or discriminatory behaviour and the damaging effects this has. Our intention remains to continue a financial commitment to the stadium itself, which is also the home of Leeds Rhinos rugby, as we believe this supports the aims of diversity and inclusion in sport along with a range of charitable community endeavours.

“Emerald will however no longer sponsor Yorkshire County Cricket Club. We hope that YCCC will listen and respond with serious action to eradicate racism from the club and uphold the values we all expect.”

Tetley’s Beer has also spoken out about recent events regarding the issue, but Tetley’s, which sponsored the Challenge Cup between 2013 and 2014, has outlined that they will not be punishing the Rhinos or Carnegie for the actions of the cricketing club.

It remains to be seen what Headingley will be named in 2022, but the cricket club still has major questions to answer.
