Leeds Rhinos CEO Gary Hetherington speaks on Tony Smith and new backroom staff

There has been two major bits of news released over a week ago.

First, it was the news that Hull KR head coach Tony Smith would be leaving Craven Park after almost three years at the helm.

The second saw Rohan Smith appointed as new Leeds Rhinos boss.

For Leeds chief executive, Gary Hetherington, the departure of Tony Smith took him by surprise.

“There was no correlation between the two bits of news – that came as a surprise for me,” Hetherington said.

“Tony did a terrific job at Hull KR and I was a bit surprised and it came completely out of the blue.

“I can’t speak for Tony but I do know he is an outstanding coach – that’s where his passion is.

“That’s the sort of role he will be looking at because he’s had success everywhere he has been and I don’t see why he can’t have further success.”

With Rohan Smith joining the Rhinos, Hetherington has confirmed that the backroom staff will remain the same.

“Rohan will inherit the changes here – we want to create some stability.

“Rohan will come and replace Jamie Jones-Buchanan as head coach and Jamie will return to his role as assistant.

“Jamie is a potential head coach for the future and it’s been an unexpected experience but one he has served very well.”
