Leeds Rhinos boss Richard Agar reveals NRL and rugby union interest in two of his stars

There was perhaps little surprise that Leeds Rhinos wanted to tie down a number of their star players so quickly heading into pre-season.

With Harry Newman and Mikolaj Oledzki signing new long-term deals at Headingley, Leeds managed to overcome interest from rugby union and NRL to make a huge statement.

Head coach Richard Agar, however, was keen to explain that he was confident the duo would sign on.

“There was plenty of interest, agents wouldn’t be doing their jobs if they didn’t test the market,” Agar said.

“We’re in cloud cuckoo loud if we think Harry Nemwan’s agent’s phone isn’t ringing from rugby union or the NRL, like with Mikolaj in the NRL.

“Such as been their development we felt they needed rewarding and put in their rightful place in the pecking order.”

Agar also revealed just how popular Newman’s signature has been.

“Harry Newman is one of the most sought after talents in world rugby – in both codes.

“The important line for me is did the players want to be here?

“If it was purely a financial deal we might not have got there but I totally respect the guys looking at what their options are.

“We needed them to make their own decision if they wanted to stay at Leeds and let them come to their own conclusions.”
