Leeds Rhinos announce new halfback partnership as signings take four first-team numbers

Leeds Rhinos have been announcing their squad numbers today in an unconventional fashion with a few surprises along the way.

With an announcement every hour or so, the numbers have been adding up and Leeds fans will notice that three of their new signings have been given the numbers 2, 6, 7 and 11.

Rookie fullback Jack Walker continues in the number 1 shirt ahead of Richie Myler whose move to the back has been a revelation since his transformation from a halfback.

But, perhaps unsurprisingly, both new signings Blake Austin and Aidan Sezer have taken the number 6 and 7 respectively as the Rhinos head into the 2022 Super League season with David Fusitu’a taking 2 and James Bentley 11.

Austin and Sezer take over from Rob Lui and Luke Gale, with the former having retired and the latter moving to Hull FC on a one-year deal.

And, Austin spoke to Rhinos TV about how excited he is to link up with former Canberra Raiders teammate Sezer.

“I’m very excited to spend a lot more time with Aidan,” Austin said.

“He followed me on the way over here to the UK and now to pull on a jersey together will be vey exciting.

Australian halfback Austin, however, is aware that the two will need to put the work in.

“We will have to work hard and that’s what pre-season is for.

“We know how each other ticks and we know what we like and what we don’t like, so we’re excited to get going.”
