Leeds Rhinos and St Helens lead Super League for attendance in Round 21

Rhyse Martin kicks the ball for Leeds Rhinos

Round 21 of Super League has helped set the competition up nicely for Magic Weekend where all top eight sides will face each other, something that happened just twice this week but both games drew the largest attendance figures.

The standout result of the round came at Headingley on Saturday where Leeds Rhinos defeated Wigan Warriors 30-4 in a season-best performance. Lachlan Miller won Man of the Match for his try and two-assist performance but Rhyse Martin was influential again as he scored 18 of the 30 points. Harry Smith was also sent off in that game for a swinging arm to the head.

Wigan’s failure to win meant Hull KR remain top of Super League after their 36-6 win on Friday night at Craven Park. The other game that evening saw Catalans Dragons scrape past Huddersfield 23-22 thanks to an Arthur Mourgue drop goal.

Just 24 hours earlier, Moses Mbye had kicked a drop goal in golden point to give St Helens a 17-16 win over playoff rivals Salford in one of the games of the round, which also saw controversy regarding disciplinary matters.

The remaining fixtures, played on Sunday, saw Leigh Leopards hammer Hull FC 42-12 and Warrington Wolves see off a spirited London side to win 34-22 in the capital.

Magic Weekend comes next for Super League with a huge attendance across the two days expected but the numbers are now in for Round 21.

Round 21 Super League Attendance Figures

The best-attended game happened to be at the biggest result of the weekend with Leeds Rhinos and Wigan drawing an attendance of 12,459. The result keeps Leeds’ slim Super League playoff hopes alive.

Another playoff battle, Thursday’s clash between Saints and Salford, also drew a significant crowd with 11,050 witnessing that golden point drama.

Far fewer watched Catalans’ one-point win over Huddersfield 34 hours later with just under 3,500 in attendance at the John Smiths Stadium. There is no figure for Friday night’s other Super League game with Hull KR not publishing crowd details weekly.

A strong crowd of 8,400 watched Leigh defeat Hull, who had travelled in good numbers, whilst London’s clash with Warrington is still to be confirmed.
