Leeds Rhinos and St Helens come up short as York City Knights win Women’s Nines competition

It’s common knowledge that in the last few seasons Leeds Rhinos and St Helens have led the way in recent years.

The Rhinos were double winners in 2019 before the Saints went one better last year as they won the treble. The two met in the Challenge Cup Final at Elland Road this year which went the way of the Saints before they met in a thrilling encounter in Super League which the Rhinos won live on Sky Sports.

However, there is another team starting to challenge the two. York City Knights after their Challenge Cup Final defeat last year pushed the Rhinos all the way in the Challenge Cup semi-finals and also defeated St Helens in the league this year.

Now they can claim to be the inaugural Nines winners after beating both the Rhinos and Saints on the road to the trophy.

The final was a frantic affair with one try as York won 7-0 against the Rhinos as Leeds desperately looked for an equalising try in the bonus zone.

That came after a comprehensive semi-final win over the Saints in the semis led by the brilliant Hollie Dodd as always who scored the final try of the game for the Knights.

The other semi-final was a 23-7 win for the Rhinos against the impressive Catalans Dragons who many hope will soon join the Super League and showed their credentials with their semi-final appearance today.
