Leeds Rhinos and Hull FC among Super League clubs sweating disciplinary

Several Super League clubs including Leeds Rhinos and Hull FC will be sweating today’s disciplinary panel after the Round Seven matches.

Super League returned after a week off for the Challenge Cup and the competition certainly delivered with plenty of drama.

Hull KR lost their unbeaten streak as Wigan reminded everyone just how clinical they are, Hull FC continued to show that their fast start isn’t fleeting, and a surprise hero emerged for Leeds Rhinos as James McDonnell scored four tries.

There was also six yellow cards shown across the weekend, an increase from previous weeks in Super League, and that could see more action taken today when the Match Review Panel meet to discuss all things disciplinary.

We’ve picked out all the players who were sent to the bin as well as another incident that was perhaps fortunate not to warrant action, as we preview which Super League teams and players will be sweating today’s disciplinary verdict.

Starting with the first game of the week and it did not take long for the first yellow card to be brandished, around 15 seconds in fact. Keenan Palasia, who had ended Round Six in the sin bin, went high on the first tackle of the game and found himself back in the stands for the opening ten minutes against Salford.

That didn’t affect Leeds in terms of the result as they won 28-0 but it perhaps stopped a quick start, which allowed the Red Devils to dig in and avoid another embarrassing score.

Palasia wasn’t the only Rhinos forward to get intro trouble as Mikolaj Oledzki committed a near identical offence, earning him ten minutes in the bin in the second-half. Both men will be wary of today’s Super League disciplinary verdict as we look ahead to Round Eight.

Hull FC have had plenty of issues in their second-row and that’s seen them thrust Jack Ashworth in there, however, they’ll be hoping he avoids a ban and is available for the Hull derby following his late tackle against Warrington Wolves.

George Lawler of Castleford also went to the bin on Saturday with the ex-Hull KR man committing a tip tackle against the Leopards, worthy of a sin bin and we’ll find out later if that warrants further action.

The final game of the round saw Huddersfield’s winless streak continue as they fell 38-18 to Catalans Dragons and a number of the French side’s points came when Sam Hewitt was in the bin. The second-rower appeared to kick out at debutant Leo Darrelatour when he scored in the first-half, earning himself ten minutes in the bin and giving Catalans the opportunity for an eight-point try.

Earlier in that first half, Tom Burgess had gone high in the tackle and looked set to march but the video referee adjudged it to be secondary contact, however, that call will surely be looked at again.
