Tonight the unthinkable happened. Leeds were trailing against the brilliant Catalans Dragons 30-6 with 20 minutes to go.
They were a man down as well with Matt Prior sent off for a head high tackle after 56 minutes having already picked up a yellow card earlier in the game.
However, that incident lit a fire inside the Rhinos who then stormed to victory. Richie Myler scored a hat trick after great work from Cameron Smith, Aidan Sezer and James Bentley before a brilliantly inventive try from Brad Dwyer who regathered his own kick to score made it 32-30.
Rhyse Martin then sent the game to golden point extra time with a penalty and inside extra time Aidan Sezer showed a little dummy before carving through the Catalans defence to score a try to seal a 36-32 win over the Dragons.
Afterwards, he spoke to the Leeds Rhinos YouTube channel and reflected on the win.
“It was good to get the win overall, and good scenes at the end there for the traveling fans from Leeds, the best fans in the league,” Sezer said, “It was a fitting end to cap off all the boys’ hard work. It was a tough game, in tough conditions and we hung in there.
“We were down 24 points we stuck in there as a group in the grind and believing in our systems and it got us back in the game. Two points at this stage of the season is vital.”
He also broke down his match winning try explaining how the pressure he was put under as he attempted his drop goal attempt earlier in golden point led the way for his try: “There was a lot of pressure on me at the right stick to put it on my left foot and I didn’t strike it the way I wanted to.
“Just made sure we had that running threat if they do pressure me again and they did and luckily enough it opened up. I think it’s a fitting end to the day for the club.
“We’ve got a lot of strike in our team and you see that by how many points we scored there to get back into the game. To cap it off like that having the boys pull shape and it open up for me is a pretty simple try in the end but it rewards all their hard work and is something we can build on.”
The celebrations were just as special as the try as the Leeds players darted over to the Rhinos fans led by Sezer and the former Huddersfield halfback reflected on this: “I knew our contingent was sat in the corner and I think Rhyse Martin was grabbing me and I was saying ‘let me go, let me go, I want to get to the fans and celebrate with them.”
