Leeds 18-32 Castleford: Player ratings and major talking points

It was a disappointing night for the Headingley faithful as Leeds went down to defeat in a West Yorkshire derby against an energetic Castleford side.

Major Talking Points:

1. Cas stars back and prove the difference

A lot was made in the buildup to this game about Castleford’s returning stars and plenty of them conjured up top notch performances to propel the Tigers to victory. If they can keep the core of the side fit for the rest of the season, they could make a serious push for the playoffs.

2. Leeds missing key men

If the Tigers were boosted by the return of their key players, Leeds were hindered by the absence of some of their stars. The Rhinos were without forwards Mikolaj Oledzki and Alex Mellor as well as talisman Luke Gale. But the most damaging absentee was Matt Prior. The Rhinos skipper offers size down the middle but also straightens up the attack and Leeds missed that in the first half as they struggled for points.

3. Tipping point in the season

I can’t help but wonder if tonight was a key moment for both teams. Leeds have done it tough all season and constantly backed up after short turnarounds. Tonight the games got to them and they looked tired. The Tigers meanwhile seemed full of energy and never looked like losing. It’ll be interesting to see who has the better run-in and which side pushes for the top six more.
