Lee Radford reveals why Niall Evalds missed Castleford Tigers’ win over Hull FC and hails superb trio

Lee Radford finally got off the mark as Castleford Tigers boss at the Jungle today as his side ran out 33-26 winners.

The Tigers were in the lead from the first eight seconds after Ligi Sao dropped the ball from the kick-off and Daniel Smith scooping up to dot down.

Things didn’t really improve throughout for the Black and Whites, whilst Radford’s men looked enthusiastic and determined to grind out their first victory of the season.

And, for head coach Radford – against his former club for the first time – was overjoyed against adversity.

“I’m really pleased, the first three weeks you use the old cliches that we’re building and trying to get better but winning is ultimately what you play for,” Radford told BBC Radio Leeds after the game.

“We took some uppercuts from the disciplinary from Bureta (Faraimo) and Liam (Watts) and then we had Niall (Evalds) and (Nathan) Massey with their hamstrings, but there was a bounce in what they did and the performance epitomised this.”

Radford was keen to praise his team and three men in particular as the Tigers played some great attacking rugby.

“I felt in periods we didn’t really get away from them, but we kept battling and working.

“Physically they had a bigger pack than us which meant we had to be smarter with the ball and play some footy.

“To see the air on the ball that we played with was much prettier to watch.

“I thought George Lawler, Daniel Smith and Joe Westerman up front were phenomenal – they were asked to do big minutes and they did it so well.”
