Lee Briers’ son signs for League 1 side

British rugby league right now is full of stars from famous rugby league families.

Leon Pryce’s son Will shone at Huddersfield last year, Ellery Hanley’s lad Umyla starred for Wigan whilst Jim Gannon’s son Morgan impressed at Headingley in 2021.

Gannon is one of a number of exciting youngsters at Leeds whose fathers happen to be former rugby league stars such as Jack Sinfield, son of legendary Leeds skipper Kevin, who was given the number 32 jersey at Leeds just a few weeks ago ahead of his first season with the club’s first team.

But another son of a legendary Super League halfback has made news today. Reece Briers has today joined North Wales Crusaders for the 2022 campaign.

The young halfback is the son of Wales legend Lee Briers who helped his national side all the way to the World Cup semi-finals in 2000 and is considered a legend at Warrington having helped the club to three Challenge Cup trophies, the League Leaders’ Shield in 2011 and a first ever Grand Final in 2012.

Reece unsurprisingly was picked up by Warrington developing through their system before starring for their academy over the last two years.

However, following his father’s departure to Wigan with a new era at Warrington beginning under Daryl Powell, Reece has also left the club joining the North Wales Crusaders for 2022.

Speaking to the club website about the move, Briers said: “I can’t wait and I’m really looking forward to the experience of playing against men.

“I want to earn the respect of my team mates and hopefully get as much experience as I can.

“For me, it’s going to be about working hard and aiming to get my way into the team.

“Even though it was a brilliant season for the club in 2021, I know they were disappointed to drop out of the play-offs so hopefully we can push on even more now.

“With my dad playing for Wales, I know the fans are very passionate so I’m really looking forward to playing in front of them.”
