Lee Briers is a name mostly associated with Warrington Wolves, but that might be changing.
That’s because he helped deliver the Challenge Cup to Wigan last week as they defeated Huddersfield 16-14 in a brilliant game decided by a magic Liam Marshall try.
Whilst previewing his former club Warrington’s game against Leeds, Briers – assistant coach at Wigan – reflected on the celebrations afterwards specifically the bus ride home and the difference between being a player and a coach.
“It’s very different,” he told Brian Carney on Sky Sports, “The bus journey home from any Challenge Cup Final is special, that’s where memories are made.
“The boys had a really good time. We stopped halfway at a little pub and built some memories for what was a special weekend in the club’s 150th year.
He also explained that he and new Head Coach Matt Peet had been given a directive to win this Challenge Cup for very personal reasons by chairman Ian Lenagan: “The first piece of silverware that we could have won. We had a directive from the chairman that he wanted to win the Challenge Cup. His partner is a massive Tottenham fan so it was massive for the Lenagan family.
“You’ve seen the try from Liam, a really special way to win the game.”
