Lebanon vs Ireland records strong attendance at Leigh Leopards’ Leigh Sports Village

The biggest game of the second round of the Rugby League World Cup took place today as Lebanon met Ireland in a battle for a quarter-final spot.

The winner knew that they were all but guaranteed a quarter-final against Australia next week with a win due to the fact that Ireland take on world number one ranked side New Zealand in their final group game whilst Lebanon take on Jamaica, one of the World Cup new boys.

It wasn’t the close game many people expected or wanted as a strong first half from Lebanon gave them absolute control.

They led 20-0 after Reece Robinson got the ball rolling with the first try as Mitchell Moses ran the show.

Hull KR bound Louis Senior claimed a lovely double either side of halftime for Ireland to give themselves hope but Lebanon claimed back-to-back tries themselves with the second coming courtesy of a lovely finish from Wigan Warriors’ Abbas Miski.

Ed Chamberlain did have the last say on his home ground as the Leigh Leopard got a try at Leigh Sports Village.

But what attendance did the game record? Well the match recorded an attendance of 6,057 which is around the average with most games getting at least 6000 with New Zealand vs Lebanon and Greece vs France the only exceptions.

Meanwhile, Australia’s two games have recorded five figures as England have played in front of 43,000 fans in game as well as 23,000 fans yesterday.

Lebanon’s last group game which comes against Jamaica will also be held at Leigh Sports Village as they look to mathematically secure their spot in the last eight.
