A League 1 game has been called off less than 48 hours before kick-off of the opening round of fixtures.
Workington Town have announced that their game against Cornwall, due to be played on Sunday, has been postponed.
It’s an unfortunate turn of events due to it being the very first round of the season, with five key ties meant to be taking place.
In a statement on their website, the Workington board of directors have said: “After significant and intensive rain over the last few days, the pitch is currently waterlogged.
“As Cornwall travel at 6 am Saturday, the RFL have instructed us to make the call on Sunday’s match today.
“As the weather forecast is for severe wind and rain we, after communication with the RFL, have made the very reluctant decision to call off the game.
“A rearranged date will be communicated in due course and all tickets bought will stand for the rearranged date.”
Cumbria is expected to have heavy and persistent rain from the early hours of Sunday morning and it looks set to continue for the rest of the week too.
Workington were going into the game on the back of two defeats.
Having lost 60-0 to Leigh Leopards in the third round of the Challenge Cup, they’re also out of the 1895 Cup.
They were beaten 18-10 last Sunday by Dewsbury Rams under new head coach Jonty Gorley.
Their opposition, Cornwall, were heading into the fixture with the same recent form.
A 52-0 loss against North Wales Crusaders in the second round of the Challenge Cup before a 64-12 defeat at Rochdale Hornets two weeks ago.
Both teams will be looking to improve on 2024’s League 1 campaigns.
The home side managed a sixth-place finish but lost in the first week of the playoffs 24-22 to the Midlands Hurricanes.
Cornwall finished 2024 in 10th place, securing three wins by beating Newcastle at home 30-6 in round 11 and 44-34 away in round 18 as well as Midlands Hurricanes 24-22 in round 16.
In their meetings in League 1 last season, Workington got the better of Cornwall in round 7 52-18 at home as well as 30-8 away.
