Lam wary of former Wigan players

Adrian Lam is aware of the threat posed by a number of former Wigan Warriors players ahead of his side’s crucial clash with Catalans on Thursday.

The Dragons impressive squad includes Sam and Joel Tomkins, Lewis Tierney, Tom Davies and Michael McIlorum, all of whom have won trophies in the past with Wigan.

Speaking more in-depth on the French outfit, Lam said: “Catalans have had a really good couple of wins and they have had a few games at home too, so they will be on the road for the first time in three or four weeks.

“We want to try and back up the performance last Friday with another strong display.

“There are a lot of former Wigan players in their team and they will want to do well.

“We had some issues with the way they played in one of the games in Barcelona last year.

“We know what they are capable of and if we are not on our game, they can hurt us in all different areas.”

Victory against the Dragons in Warrington would put Lam’s side well and truly in the driving seat for a playoff place.

Wigan currently sit second in the table and are on the coattails of rivals St Helens, however Lam is concentrating on the welfare of his squad rather than chasing top spot.

He added: “It is very difficult to be honest. I have some good players who will miss out at some stage.

“We have to keep in mind that we have to rotate the squad to keep players fresh and to keep winning.

“Not necessarily our best team will play every week and there is no right or wrong way to do that.

“We have to do what we think is the best way for it. We have got a pretty good handle on that at the moment but we have to make sure we tick all of those boxes with the finals in mind, but also having to win to make the four.

“With the percentages introduced, it has certainly brought other teams into play around that third or fourth spot. We just have to keep winning for now.”
