Leigh Leopards head coach Adrian Lam was full of praise recently for new signing David Armstrong, comparing him to Wigan Warriors superstars.

Leigh finally got the move for the full-back done recently after months of speculation, and he’s a player that should really take them up a level, despite how well Matt Moylan has been playing in the position.

The Newcastle Knights talent signs on a three-year deal, despite NRL sides such as Sydney Roosters and the Knights themselves keen to secure his services going forward.

Leopards head coach Adrian Lam said in a press conference today: “He’s a player that we’ve had our eye on for 18 months but because he’s contracted there, you have to wait until he comes off contract before you can have any further negotiations.

“I think part of the key as a coach is to make sure you identify talent regardless of what competition you’re playing in around the world and it’s one thing that we do reasonably well here.”

Lam seems absolutely certain of his quality, even suggesting he may go down a route similar to that of some of the league’s very best, continuing: “I think he’s going to set Super League alight and be down a similar path as Bevan French and Jai Field.

“He’s got a similar style of play but he’s also only very, very young.

“He’s here for three years plus on top of that and he’s a player that can learn in our system here and hopefully as coach, I can take him to the next level as a player.

“I think for the Leigh fans, just expect speed like no other. He’s incredibly quick and he’s got that try-scoring nose where he’ll just turn up out of nowhere and get one of those tries.

“He’s one of those players that are going to come to us and hopefully make us better in the immediate future.”

Adrian Lam: Leigh Leopards recruit has the “X-factor”

Leopards fans should be very excited about the new recruit, who scored an NRL hattrick against Gold Coast Panthers in May – in just his third game at the highest level.

Lam said: “He’s very professional in everything that he does. He’s got that X-factor about him where he can break tackles. If anyone makes a break, he’s so quick that he can snuff that out and have that X-factor where he can break the game open like the French and Field do for Wigan.

“We’ll get a whole off-season with him before he comes, unless things happen sooner, which they’re not planned at the moment, but you never know with the way that things go. I feel that we’re excited about getting him here as soon as we can.”
