Lam furious at Wigan performance

“We embarrassed ourselves and the club!” Are the words of a furious Adrian Lam.

The Wigan Warriors Head Coach saw his side annihilated in the South of France 48-0 by an impressive Catalans Dragons outfit, ending their 100-per-cent league record this season.

It was also the heaviest loss for Lam since he began his tenure as coach at the club in 2019.

“It was a performance that during my time here, we have not had,” he shared.

“Admittedly, we have not been great over the last couple of weeks but I guess to some degree, a loss was coming but of that extent, I do not understand how it got to that point.

“We had a lot of players playing out of position today and limping really into the game and you just cannot do that. Obviously, we need as many of the boys on board and we have done that today but it just hurt us.”

However, despite sustaining such a thrashing, Lam admitted his side could have easily lost by more as the Dragons had five tries ruled out by both video referee Ben Thaler and man in the middle James Child.

“We had our opportunities early but then again the mistakes came to get us,” Lam added.

“Just like they have over the last couple of weeks and against better opposition today, we got punished. It probably should have been more at half-time to be honest. There were alarming signs earlier on in the game.

“It is not one I have experienced here before. It is not one that I could see coming. I thought we have not been great and at some stage we were going to get hurt and today was that day.”

It got from bad to worse late on as Zak Hardaker was red carded for a head butt on England rival Sam Tomkins, with Joel coming to his brother’s aid and receiving a sin-bin for his part in the scuffle.

Having his say on the incident, Lam said “I need to have a look at that more closely.

“Being red carded for that is just unacceptable. A minute to go in the game, I do not know how bad it is or how it looked as I did not have a good angle from where we were.

“Realistically, a really poor end to the game, especially if there are any repercussions from that. It is a nightmare. It is not good for us. With a minute to go, it is quite a disappointing action but I will need another look to see how bad it is.

“We are short on the outside backs as it is and that act was perhaps the most disappointing part of the game.”
