Kristian Woolf reveals serious injury to key St Helens star

St Helens’ James Bentley has done it tough in 2021 with injury, but head coach Kristian Woolf has now revealed that he will play no further part in the season due to a serious problem.

The second-rower will be a Leeds Rhinos player in 2022, but has played a key role for Saints in recent seasons and Woolf is sad to bear the news.

“I was talking to a specialist and the risk was way too great so, James Bentley will be out for a 12-week period and then there will be more scans for him to be able to heal before he is in a position to do contact,” Woolf said.

“We’re gutted and he’s gutted with the information.

“We’d love to have him playing with us as going back to 2020 he was one of our best if not our best all year.

“He has been a really big part of what we’ve done but unfortunately for him he just hasn’t been able to get on the field for an extended time.

“We’ve certainly missed him this season and we will miss him next year.”

Woolf did have positive news on the injury front, though, as Jonny Lomax came through the defeat to Salford unscathed.

“I’m very comfortable with what he will produce, plus he is defensively sound.

“He makes sure he ticks boxes every time he takes to the field and he’s a really important player for us.”
