Kieran Hudson finds new club after surprise Castleford Tigers exit

Former Castleford Tigers man Kieran Hudson

Ambitious Championship outfit York Knights have moved quickly to sign prop Kieran Hudson following his exit from Castleford Tigers.

Tigers this afternoon announced Hudson had departed “by mutual consent”, just a month after joining them for a second spell, from Leeds Rhinos.

Now Knights have confirmed his signing on a one-year contract, with coach Mark Applegarth saying: “I am really delighted we’ve got Kieran on board.

“I know he is a player Clint [Goodchild, Knights’ chairman] has been tracking for a number of years.

“I first saw Kieran when he was at Leeds. He has definitely got some impact and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Castleford have already replaced Hudson by bringing in ex-Hull KR prop Dan Okoro on loan from Warrington Wolves.

Their statement on Hudson’s exit said: “After a long discussion with Kieran about his goals for the future and our ambitions for the squad, he expressed a desire to pursue his future with another club. We wish Kieran all the best for the next stage of his career.”

The 24-year-old was a  goalkeeper with home town club Sunderland AFC before switching to rugby league.

He initially signed for Castleford Tigers from Whitehaven in 2022, but an Achilles injury in pre-season sidelined him for the whole of 2023 and he moved to Leeds at the end of that year.

Grandson of Leeds great John Holmes, he played in Rhinos’ reserves and once on dual-registration for Halifax Panthers last season, but the Headingley club announced in September he had been released from the final year of his contract, without making a first team appearance.
