We have seen spectacular tries, amazing tackles, classic encounters and sensational rugby but all of those season highlights were dwarfed by what we saw yesterday with Kevin Sinfield and Rob Burrow completing a marathon together.
Burrow was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in December 2019. Since then, Rob and his family have campaigned tirelessly to raise awareness and funds to support other families living with MND.
Yesterday was the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon and saw over 10,000 participants take on a brand new route through Leeds that starts and finishes at Headingley Stadium. Taking in some of Leeds’ most scenic countryside and outer suburbs, the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon proved to be be a fitting tribute to the city that launched Rob’s career and which he calls home.
The event was held in support of the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease Appeal as well as the MND Association.
The likes of Sky Sports pundits Barrie McDermott and Jamie Jones-Buchanan were involved as was Leeds Rhinos legend Kevin Sinfield and others such as Matt Adamson who has come over from Australia to take part.
The current Leeds squad will be around and former Super League official Richard Silverwood was also be involved.
Former Leeds man and NRL star Luke Burgess also came over to the UK for the event as well after his father passed away with MND.
All touching tributes but the highlight of the day was when Rob Burrow finished the race. He had been pushed around the course by Sinfield in a specially designed chair but at the end Sinfield carried Burrow over the finishing line in an emotional moment.
Such a powerful image, it even made the front page of a national newspaper in the shape of the Mirror.
Often we see tragedies make these front pages so to see something so inspiring from the world of rugby league make the front page is truly fantastic.
