Kevin Naiqama in line for shock start

Kevin Naiqama is in line for a shock start for his new club Sydney Roosters in their opening game of the season.

That’s according to the Daily Telegraph which has reported that the Fijian international has garnered enough support from Trent Robinson and his coaching staff to nail down a starting spot.

And, after being initially told that he would not start at centre, it is thought that Naiqama will be vying for one of the centre spots alongside Joseph Manu.

The former Wests Tigers star certainly made his mark at his former Super League club St Helens, helping Saints to three Grand Final victories in a row as well as a Challenge Cup success in 2021.

Naiqama scored 33 tries in 65 appearances and also scooped up the Harry Sunderland Trophy for the role he played in helping Saints win the 2021 Grand Final, scoring two tries in a 12-10 victory over the Catalans Dragons.

Following a trophy-laden three years on Merseyside, Naiqama returned to Australia with his young family, hopeful of another shot in the NRL.

And, the Roosters – who suffered with endless injuries in 2021 – obliged with a one-year deal providing the impetus to go even harder.
