Kevin Brown claims Super League side were “pretty lucky”

Challenge Cup

This Super League season has been one of the most interesting in reason memory.

Especially at the top of the league. Warrington Wolves spent the first third of the season unrivalled at the top of the league after eight wins in a row.

They have wobbled since. It looked like Wigan Warriors would force their way to the summit for the long term but they too have wobbled and St Helens’ form has been one constant wobble.

This means that the side who are top is a team that many wrote off at the start of the season in the shape of Catalans Dragons and Kevin Brown is very impressed by them.

“They are, and the most impressive thing for me is they’ve done it without some key personnel along the way,” he said on BBC Five Live.

“We mentioned Williams and Drinkwater missing at Warrington, well Mitchell Pearce has been out for a period, Sam Tomkins is back, but he’s been nursing a knee injury.

“I think Arthur Mourgue, what he’s doing as a player now, he’s coming through and he’s really standing up and leading that side and the new signing of Johnstone, he’s just been a revelation.

“So they have definitely gone under the radar, but everything can turn around though in a couple of weeks.

“There’s no truer thing than the fact that sport humbles you as a player and as a coach and as a team. You’re only a couple of weeks off turning your fortunes around. So they’ll be keeping the feet firmly on the floor.”

That said, he felt they were lucky to beat Leigh Leopards last week:

“They were pretty lucky to get a result against Leigh. For the last try Leigh got an overlap and Joe Mellor created some space for Gareth O’Brien and O’Brien was icing them all day but he dropped the ball and Johnstone went the length.

“So it was an 8 point win but in reality that was just a coin toss on one moment.”
