Kevin Brown believes Super League star is better than Wigan Warriors’ Jai Field

There is always a massive debate in Super League about who is the best player in the competition.

That’s why awards such as the Steve Prescott Man of Steel and the Albert Goldthorpe Medal are always closely watched by those associated with the sport.

One of those players who is expected to be in the mix for the big prizes at the end of the year is Wigan Warriors star Jai Field who has excelled for the Lancashire club in 2022.

Able to create something out of nothing with electric pace and devastating acceleration, Field has lit up Super League this season, overcoming an injury hit 2021 to become one of the most exciting in the competition in 2022.

Having said that, former Salford Red Devils and Warrington Wolves halfback, Kevin Brown, believes that there is a player out there that is better than Field in Super League at present – and that is St Helens playmaker Jack Welsby.

“I’m running out of words for him, he’s so good and such a good player,” Brown said on The Last Tackle podcast.

“I don’t think he will get fullback of the year because I think Jai Field will get but I think Jack Welsby is a better player. He’s an all-round better player – he’s got pace, a kicking game, a cutch play with drop goal and can move position.

“For me he is the best player in the league at the minute and it’s frightening where he can go.

“He’s got to be in the starting 13 for England.”

Whether or not Shaun Wane does include Welsby in his England squad remains to be seen, but Welsby will certainly help the national side when coming up against the bigger defences that tire more easily in the World Cup.

It would also reward for the Saints man for some incredible performances in 2022 so far.
