Junior Sau departs for new challenge following seven years in the UK

Junior Sa’u has departed for his new challenge on the other side of the Atlantic following the advent of the new year.

The powerful centre had been at Leigh since July 2019 following a short spell on loan at Wakefield Trinity, but the 34-year-old has now made the surprise move to the United States to join rugby union side Washington DC Glory.

And, he boarded his flight in the early hours of the morning to face a fresh start, leaving his young family behind as he takes advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Sa’u turned pro with Newcastle Knights in 2008 for whom he scored two tries on his debut against Canterbury Bulldogs. His performances earned him international recognition and he represented New Zealand nine times and Samoa twice.

After 86 appearances for the Knights, he had a short spell with Melbourne Storm in 2013 before a move to Salford came about just in time for the 2014 campaign.

Sa’u stayed at the AJ Bell Stadium for six years, scoring 60 tries in 142 appearances and becoming a huge favourite with the Red Devils fans – something which he has also achieved at the Leigh Sports Village.
