Jon Wilkin slams Magic Weekend

RFL player charges

Former St Helens and Toronto forward Jon Wilkin has earned himself a reputation as a hard-nosed pundit – whether that’s on Sky Sports or the BBC, he is always good value for money.

However, following the success of the Magic Weekend on its return to St James’ Park in Newcastle with fans finally being allowed back in, Wilkin has admitted he was never a fan of the concept as a player.

“As a player I didn’t enjoy the Magic Weekend,” Wilkin said on the BBC Five Live Rugby League program.

“I thought it was an opportunity for clubs that hadn’t earned the right to play in a big game, to get to experience being part of a big game.

“It frustrated me that we’d worked hard all year to get to a big game in big stadiums and then we were just gifting teams the opportunity to have a big game atmosphere.”

St Helens and some of their players, fan and directors along with a few others of the so called elite have very inflated opinions of themselves.
Without the so called lesser teams no sport would exist.
Rugby league has enough challenges without the ill informed bias and almost bigoted opinions of the likes of Wilkins.
Yet another shot through the foot.
Perhaps if the commentators him included could give a much more balanced, intelligent and informative opinion.
No doubt you will refuse and return any renumeration you got, or get from these occasions.
