Jon Wilkin slams “bad, sloppy, terrible piece of defence”

A sensational comeback from the Leeds Rhinos saw them battle back from 12-0 down to 18-13 ahead last night against Huddersfield Giants.

However, the Giants nearly nicked it when they broke down field through a superb Tui Lolohea break which led to Chris McQueen’s second thanks to a Jake Connor kick.

However, as Jon Wilkin assessed the try, he was left shocked by an uncharacteristic miss from brilliant Leeds prop Mikolaj Oledzki.

Wilkin said: “Lolohea gets the ball and wanders, it is such a bad, sloppy, terrible piece of defence from Oledzki. It is sloppy but unbelievable from Lolohea.

“When you’re tired, when you’re feeling fatigued, Lolohea will exploit that and Huddersfield Giants get excited and then a really nice character from Connor.”

However, Connor then missed the attempt at goal which left Leeds 18-17 ahead and the Rhinos held on.

As the game came to a close, Jon Wilkin said:

“Real character from Leeds, they could have easily let this drift couldn’t they. Rohan Smith will be delighted with the character, the strength of character, his side have shown.

“Ian Watson will have some questions about his team’s performance I’m sure.”

It was a win that gave the Rhinos a fourth win of the season out of eight games and saw the Rhinos leapfrog the Giants in the table.

They now need to find some consistency.
