Last week all eyes were on England as Shaun Wane named an experimental side against France and went on to win 64-0 against Laurent Frayssinous’ team.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Rugby League Verdict, Jon Wilkin have his assessment of the experimental game:
“Yeah it was experimental from both sides. Both sides trying things.
“I suppose it raises the question, is the international game where you try things.
“England and France certainly did that but to say there was 13 debutants in the team, how clinical they were and the performance was exceptional.
“Jack Welsby is an absolute star of the game.
“Shaun Wane will be delighted. Not with the points, that is pretty, but the defence and keeping France out.
“It was an excellent game.”
At the heart of this experimental side was experienced Warrington Wolves star George Williams who captained the side.
Wilkin said Williams is in white hot form and is “untouchable” at present:
“I think it was impossible for him to play any better. Especially when you consider that it was his first game as captain.
“He has been playing well for his club side. But the tendency when you are playing well is to go away from what you do and try something different.
“My fear for George going into the game was that he would go away what has been working for him at Warrington.
“Well he didn’t. He is in white hot form and is almost untouchable at the minute and when a player is playing well, he plays out of his own mind and reacts on instinct and what he knows.
“He scored a hat-trick but it was way more than that. It was a phenomenal performance from an absolute superstar.”
