Jon Wilkin says Super League franchise has been an incredible success despite recent comments from Championship owner

Jon Wilkin slams Leeds Rhinos

Yesterday, France were on the wrong end of a battering from England as Shaun Wane’s side defeated the French 64-0.

However, this isn’t a fair reflection on the Catalans Dragons who have come in for criticism as many of their best players didn’t feature in yesterday’s game.

Speaking on Sky Sports during yesterday’s game, Jon Wilkin passionately talked about how the sport needs to celebrate the success that Catalans Dragons have been in Super League.

“Can we just pay homage and credit to what Catalans Dragons bring to our competition,” he said.

“They produce an overwhelming number of young players that we see in the France side.

“It is an incredible opportunity for our fans to go and see a beautiful part of the world in the South of France.

“They have had success on the field, they have a good playing roster and they are well attended.

“What a success Catalans have been. We should celebrate that.

“They have won the Challenge Cup, the League Leaders’ Shield and reached a Grand Final.”

These comments come shortly after Keighley Cougars owner Kaue Garcia pushed against such a suggestion in the heat of the debate around IMG’s proposals.

When a fan described Catalans Dragons as “a huge success” Garcia took to Twitter to say:

“Yeap. Catalans Dragons are adding a lot to the sport Alex. ‘Huge success’ as you say.”

He said this whilst attaching an image of the lowest Challenge Cup attendance.

Catalans however hold the highest Super League attendance after their game at the Camp Nou against Wigan Warriors.
