Whilst Wigan Warriors, Warrington Wolves and St Helens jostle for position in the play-offs, Leigh Leopards chase Catalans Dragons in the race for the League Leaders’ Shield and Leeds Rhinos, Hull KR, Hull FC and Salford Red Devils fight for a play-off spot, there is a battle at the bottom of the league for survival.
After 14 defeats in a row to start the season, Wakefield looked gone but gave themselves a glimmer of hope when they defeated Leeds only for that hope to be snuffed out by Castleford Tigers a week later when they stunned Warrington Wolves to re-establish a six point lead.
But that has been clawed back to just two points with two wins from Wakefield Trinity and we have a real battle on.
Andy Last has recently spoken about the situation.
“We have got ourselves into this position. We are the ones who have got to get ourselves out of it,” Last said on BBC Radio Leeds.
“There are nine games to go and we are right in it. We must focus on what we can do well. We must make sure we take care of our own performances.
“If we perform like we know we can and improve our ball control and stiffen up defensively, we know we can beat teams. We have just gone toe to toe with the form side of the competition.”
Last also explained why the Tigers are in this position:
“We are in this position because elements of our performance haven’t been good enough and some individuals haven’t found their best form.
“However, we went into the game with a positive mindset. There was a good vibe and energy around the place. It is my job to get that positivity and vibe back into the place.”
Now Jon Wilkin has had his say on the matter: “Confidence in sport is a tricky thing. You can spend weeks trying to build confidence but it can disappear in a week.
“Wakefield are starting to build that confidence and I would love to get inside the heads of Andy Last and the Castleford players and really see how they are feeling at the moment.
“It looks like a really grim place at the minute that they’re in.”
