Jon Wilkin says Hull FC and Salford-linked man isn’t worth £180,000

The Wests Tigers caused a scramble in the Super League transfer market with the news that several of their biggest names were available on cut-price deals. One of their players has been repeatedly linked with a move to Hull FC and Salford Red Devils.

According to reports in the Australian press, Wests’ Chief Executive, Shane Flanagan, had flown into the UK with a mandate to reduce their salary cap and offload a number of their top earners. Former Wigan Warriors man, John Bateman, topped the list of available players, with the England man reportedly open to a move back to Super League.

Half-back, Jayden Sullivan, and utility back, Brent Naden, were other names reported to be available, despite being under contract for 2025 and, in Sullivan’s case, beyond. Sullivan only joined the club in the close season on a multi-year deal.

With the Tigers set to sign Samoan superstar, Jarome Luai, in the close season, they need to offload players in order to balance the books, with Luai set to sign a five-year deal worth a reported $6 million.

Now, Sky Sports pundit, Jon Wilkin, has offered his opinion on one of the Tigers’ available stars.

Speaking in the build-up to the Hull FC and Leeds Rhinos game, Wilkin offered his opinion on Sullivan. Sullivan has been linked with a move to Super League in recent weeks with Hull and Salford Red Devils reportedly in the market to sign him. However, his agent recently distanced Sullivan from the rumours.

Wilkin does not believe Sullivan offers value to clubs, given the level of the salary he would command. According to Wilkin, Sullivan falls short when compared to some of the overseas stars who would have commanded a similar salary in the past.

“But I think one of the big challenges is when you’re at a club like Hull that aren’t going so well at the minute, is because of the commercial side of the NRL, Hull have to pay above the odds for players that just wouldn’t cut it a few years back.

“And you have to pay an excessive amount on your salary cap to people who you’re still not certain whether they’re going to do the job for you.

“An example would be Shane Richardson’s been over here and he’s been offloading players from West Tigers he’s rumoured to be offering Jayden Sullivan out 180k a year. Now, in a salary cap sport, he’s played 35 NRL games.

“Do you know when I played for St. Helens, Richie Barnett was playing for all FC, Stephen Kearney was playing for all FC, you know Marc O’Meley, Craig Fitzgibbon, Jason Smith.

“Now if we want to talk about the incremental change in our competition and clubs like Hull and like Leeds, look at the quality of those marquee players and the value you get out of them.”
